LONELY HASSAN: THE MONUMENT OF THE LOST INTIMACY OF THE REFFUGEE
lend|hauer, Austria
The monument has been assembled from more than 150 pairs of male underwear sewed together by Afghan tailor Moshen Karimi. In Klagenfurt live more than 300 lonely refugee males, waiting sometimes up to 8 years to get an answer from the Austrian state regarding their right to exist here. While they wait, intimacy almost never occurs.
The installation aims to mix the frailty of loneliness experienced by these men with the testosterone-soaked representation of their manhood, it blends the unknown realities concerning the private lives inside of the Middle East with the social taboos lived in a chastity-driven culture.
